Coronavirus Hierarchy
冠状病毒等级制度
“Your place in the world during pandemic times”
“疫情期间,你在世界上的位置”
By Sandra Miranda Pattin
桑德拉·米兰达·帕丁

Who decides the importance of a person? The government? Power? Or money? In Latin America it is well known that social classes are underlined strongly by the amount of financial capacity one can achieve, separating the integration between areas of the same city. This differentiation is very clear in this territory but can also be visible even in “first world countries”. The coronavirus however doesn’t make any distinction in terms of geographic or social classes but the way we are able to confront it changes drastically depending on your position of the world’s “hierarchy”. In Ecuador at a certain point people had to leave the death bodies of their families in the streets for there was no resources to collect them, in Colombia and other south American countries there is a huge percentage of the so called “informal-workers” meaning people with no contracts that live by the day, selling products, food or others in the streets, meaning that not working one day could easily mean not having food for their family. What happens then when people is forced into a lockdown that is the only way to prevent a disaster like is happening in Brazil or USA? How can a human being decide whether to risk dying from a virus or risk dying from hunger? Rich and powerful countries responded many times by giving financial aid to people but what happens when a country is unable to do so?
